It's Only a Little Prick....

It happened a week ago. While outside at a local establishment on a windy night I felt something on my wrist, which I initially believed was a leaf. Upon further review and closer inspection, it turned out that the "leaf" was a bat! Bats are cool. Bats eat bugs by the boatload. Bats are God's practical joke on birds and mice, some kind of bizarre, sightless hybrid, and I love them. Always have. After ten or fifteen seconds, my new friend took off and flew over Lake Erie.

Naturally, being an animal-lover, I had to tell everyone I knew about the incident since it was so gratifying.

Then, reality hit.

Bats are a rabies vector, and an estimated two or three of every hundred carry the rabies virus. Furthermore, it is not normal for them to land on a human being.

After consulting with physicians, I decided that discretion was the better part of valor and agreed with the MD's that rabies shots would be a good idea.

Rabies shots. For years those two words were preceded by the words "long and painful series of.."

Round one was last Thursday, and consisted of six intra-muscular (long needle) injections: two in the deltoid muscles, two in the quads and two in the buttocks at hip level.

What was the result? More to come
