Early Indications Are Tornado Hit Westfield and Fredonia

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - There were 11 extreme weather alerts from the National Weather Service late Monday afternoon and early evening, many of them dealing with the threat of tornadoes in the Southern Tier, and now National Weather Service investigators say the early indications are that a tornado did touch down in Fredonia and Westfield.

National Weather Service investigators remain on the scene in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties, and perhaps into Allegany County as well.

It was a wild Monday afternoon in Western New York. Several tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued, mainly in the southern tier.

"We've had excessive warmth across the area and a moderate amount of moisture in the air as well," says Accu-Weather meteorologist Bob Larson. "This combines with an approaching cold front produced a so-called clash of the seasons, where you get severe storms like we did today."

Damage reports(complete listing below) came in rather quickly at the National Weather Service office. "We have reports of roofs blown off houses in Westfield, as well as trees down in Versailles and downed poles in Perrsyburg," says meteorologist Jeff Wood.

"A lot of wind damage, power lines down, poles have been snapped, trees are down blocking roadways, and a couple buildings have been damaged due to trees coming down," says Lenny Wacenske, an assistant chief with the Fredonia Fire Department.

National Weather Service meteorologists will be in the southern tier this morning to begin investigating if the damage was the result of straight line winds or tornadoes.

Callers to Sandy Beach's show also described the damage left by Mother Nature."We had a heavy wind come in off the lake," says a caller in Portland. "Multiple trees are down, the road is blocked, and riding Route 5 to the city of Dunkirk. There was no power except at the county home."

"We had torrential rains, vertical lighting. This is as bad as it gets with thunderstorms and torrential downpours," says a caller from West Falls.
