Are You Ready for Some Football….And Food?

Whether you’re a devotee of the team who is personified by the “hooded one” or are rooting for Coughlin’s corps when the Patriots and Giants battle it out on the sport’s biggest stage, Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, the Big Game is a tremendous draw around the world.
A delicious number of story angles are at play here: How will Eli Manning do in the city his brother put on the football map? Will Amherst native Rob Gronkowski continue his stellar play or will he be hobbled by his ankle injury? Will Tom Brady take more cheap shots at Buffalo hotels? Which team do Bills’ fans hate most?

No doubt preparation is vital for the Super Bowl. Sure, we’re talking pigskin pointers but what about the game plan for the menu?  Feel free to chow down as you ponder the following fun food facts:
  • The Super Bowl is the second largest day of food consumption in the U.S. The first? Thanksgiving comes out on top.
  • On game day, the Anchor Bar will sell two tons of wings.
  • If you add up all the guacamole made for Sunday’s game, it would fill Lucas Oil Stadium from end zone to end zone.
  • Chips are the second most eaten food; vegetables are #1!
  • The average Super Bowl viewer will consume 1,200 calories that day alone.
  • Antacid sales jump as high as 20% the Monday after the game.

Locally, the Super Bowl is a super seller for area pizzerias. Charlie Muscarella, who owns a restaurant bearing his name on Main St. in Williamsville, said it’s all hands on deck. Cheese and pepperoni pies are Muscarella’s biggest seller followed by boneless wings.  In the business for 15 years, Charlie says the day is hectic for his entire staff but the pizzeria runs smoothly because most customers are savvy enough to pre-order. Thanks to the brisk business, Charlie has never been home in time to watch the actual game!

Are You Ready for Some Football….And Food?
What are your Super Bowl food plans? What are your favorite Super Bowl recipes? Do you throw counting calories out the window for Super Bowl Sunday?

Super Bowl Plans
Not too sure where I'll end up yet, but what I do know is that there will be pizza and beer involved! And I will likely not bother to count calories... it's always nice to give yourself a free day from dieting.

Bring on the Za
We are going to order a sheet pizza from Papa Leo's my neighbor is making garlic wings and my wife is making a chex mix dish covered in melted chocolate and we will be rooting for our squares.

Par-tee
We are going to a big super bowl party. We'll have all sorts of pickies before hand from taco dip, to chicken wing dip, broccoli/cheddar dip and the best of all Cannoli dip! Then we'll have chili, pizza, wings, subs and antipasto! Calories? What calories?? It's even better when you don't have to worry about the game!

The Raugh Truth
I am going to have a big tray of veggies, hummus and black bean dip with some edamames, and cut up cabbage to munch on! I also love roasted Kale Chips as a substitute for Potato Chips! Would you expect anything else from me? ;-) Robbie Raugh

Another Excuse...So Let's Feast on the Super Bowl!
The Bills may be on a hiatus from postseason, but me and the family love to join friends to sit in the home stands and feast on fixings. A new favorite of mine is the blue cheese and honey dip. Nachos dipped in just about anything is another favorite. Bar-B-Que beef and pork are perfect as the main fare. And since my team isn't in the gala, the only thing that interrupts the feast are the commercials!

Make-It-Yourself
I learned years ago not to order food for either pick-up or delivery on the day of the "Big Game". Therefore, not counting calories, some of our favorites include chicken wing soup, taco salad and mini roast beef sliders. Of course, there always has to be something to satisfy the sweet tooth! Everything must be ready prior to kick-off because often the commercials are better than the game!

Calorie Forgiveness Day
We usually try to stay away from junk food, but the Super Bowl is like a holiday. It only happens once a year, so calorie counting goes out the window! Bring on the chips and dip, wings, nachos, cheezits, tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole! Yum!

Super Bowl vs.thanksgiving food
Hey Brenda, I love your columns. I prefer all the dips, subs, casseroles and salty snacks served at Super Bowl than the same old turkey and trimmings. Big buffet is a winner for the big game.

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the esamsge home a little bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. Iwill certainly be back.
