Are Your Plants Being Tricked?

Buffalo, NY (WBEN)- Even with all these way above normal temperatures, most of us know that it's not spring yet. A quick scan of your flower beds prove that your plants might not be so sure.

In a conversation being repeated all over Western New York, people are wondering what will happen to their tulips and daffodils come spring time, wondering if they come up. Sure, the plants pop up in January sometimes, but not for all of January like this year!

They get tricked alot... but not like this!!!

Jackie Albarella, who talks gardening on Channel 2, says fear not-- the bulbs should be OK.

"I worry more about flowering shrubs, like a magnolia," says Albarella. She says if the warm temperatures continue, and there isn't a hard frost, or only one very late, it could mean a lesser flower output on those shrubs.

And that's not the only reason gardeners should be looking for a good dose of cold. Albarella is less worried about plants coming up, more worried about that lack of frozen ground.

"We need a hard freeze," she explains. "When we don't get a hard freeze, a couple of bad things happen to the garden."

For example, many of the bugs or microorganisms normally killed off in that icy cold will flourish faster and better in your garden. And a lack of snow, she says, could set up drought conditions for next year.
