Super Bowl Weekend Tough on Problem Gamblers
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) For many the Super Bowl will be about the big game, big food, and big fun watching commercials. But it could be big trouble for those with gambling addictions.
The Gambling Recovery Program at Jewish Family Service expects 50 to 100 phone calls following the big game, but not right away. "We anticipate those calls two weeks from now," says Mary McConnell. She says that's when gamblers realize they can't cover bets they made or covered their bet and now can't pay the rent.
McConnell says the hype of the big game makes it tough on gamblers who are trying to recover from their addiction. She advises, "Stay in close contact with their support system, attend Gamblers Anonymous meetings and continue counseling, and try to avoid as much of the hype as they can."
