This may be the perfect time to renew your prescription for your favorite statin drug-- you know, the kind that controls cholesterol.
Why? Because the beginning of Lent offers Catholics a chance to observe their meatless Friday while breaking bread with members of the community, whether it be in a church hall, a fast-food restaurant or white-linen high end bistro.
As a number of religious leaders have noted, the fish fry is a great way to feed “one’s soul and one’s belly” while enjoying a shared meal and an annual tradition that has endured for years.
While the custom has stood the test of time, some of the menu items have changed to reflect healthier eating habits. I prefer baked fish with macaroni salad and a spicy cole slaw. The obligatory rye bread is the perfect complement to the fish.
The variations are as numerous as the fish fry choices around town during this Lenten season. I look forward to hearing from you. Remember, you can be among the first to know when I post hot off the press columns. Simply text BITES to 30930 and you’ll get the alert on your phone!
What is on your favorite eatery during the fish fry frenzy? Do you prefer the traditional fried fish with fries, cole slaw and potato/mac salad or something completely different?

Plenty of places offer great fish without throwing in a heart attack. The Plaka has great Greek fish. Frank's Sunny Italy has a fantastic Ash Wednesday spread. Hayes is always great as well.
Almost 50 years of serving a fish fry...
That's Wiechec's in Kaisertown. The whole fish fry is enough for two people, so order a couple pierogis as an appetizer and split that big old fish fry with somebody else at the table.
Serving Haddock for 20 years
Buffalo Tap Room & Grill has been serving lightly breaded haddock for over 20 years. It also sells a variety of other seafood dinners including dry scallops fried or pan seared.
I know an ice cream place isn't thought of as the best place for a fish fry, but if you travel to downtown Derby, the Super Freeze right in the middle of town has an awesome one. The atmosphere is great too, decorated like an old 50's diner.Just look for the giant dude with the cheeseburger(those are really good too!)
Two good ones
Pizza Supreme on Sheridan near Harris Hill in Clarence, and Edge of Town on Genesee near Harlem. No skimping on the side orders.

Perfect side dish
Tell Sandy Beach he's right--sweet potato fries are the best! They are my face side dish along with Cajun fish and Cole slaw. Oh yeah!
Best in Buffalo
The Plaka Restaurant at 2904 Delaware Ave in Kenmore. The fish is so fresh and the beer batter so light. Cole slaw and fries amazing. Or, you can get Greek potatoes instead. My mouth is watering just writing about it! Enjoy.

Tips on Sandy's show
Great tip today on Sandy's show! Keep them coming!
Ulrichs has a German fish fry that is delicious. Breaded fish fry served with potato panccakes and sauted vegetables. At 13.95 a little more than the usual, but it is delicious!!!!
Ulrich's German Fish Fry is no more
Just a heads-up, I used to go to Ulrich's purely for that delicious German Fish Fry and it is no longer on the menu. When I asked about it, the waitress asserted that it never was! Now you can get a German Fish Platter but I wouldn't recommend it. I believe it is beer-battered like a traditional fish fry, comes with french fries, potato pancake (that's a lot of potatoes!) and sauerkraut. No real veggies to speak of. I'd advise you not to go out of your way for Ulrich's Fish Fry any more.
Italian Pan Fried Fish at Lisa & Bob's Citta di Militello
If you want to try something a little different, the Italian Pan fried Haddock at Militellos is delicious. Served with homemade coleslaw and fresh vegetables or pasta of your choice. They also have great baked fish options. Very centrally located too at the corner of Wherle and Union Roads in the Catalyst Fitness Plaza.
