Time to Break the Chain: Local Restaurant Week Is Back

Whether you’re a vegan or someone who likes to smoke a hookah after dinner, Local Restaurant Week, running now through Sunday, April 1st, has something for just about everybody. A variety of tempting menus and cuisines is available at a discount price. Most restaurants serve three items for a fixed cost: $20.12 to coincide with the year. Some places offer an additional option; for $30.12, your menu selection offers more fine dining choices.

You might say this special week is a way to bust through the ever increasing chain presence in the area. The motto of Local Restaurant Week is “Eat. Drink. Indulge. Sample. Taste Keep it Local!”

With tabs that won’t break the bank and a variety of venues, an increase from 60 restaurants when the event began locally three years ago, to 200 this year, the objective is to entice diners to try new eateries or bring back former patrons. It’s up to the individual restaurants to determine their menu offerings for the special. Many include an appetizer, entrée and dessert, but others concoct their own combos.

From Youngstown to Eden to the city and many points in between, I plan to graze my way through the week. I’m hankering for Lebro’s shrimp over spinach fettuccini, the potato kale stew at Merge and the authentic Fattoush Salad from Mezza (minus the Hookah experience), just to name a few.

I salute the hard working men and women who labor so hard to make eating out one of the true pleasures in my life. Cheers to you all!

Do you choose independent restaurants over chains? Are you taking advantage of the $20.12 offer? If so, what did you think of the specials?

A kind word
I love and mostly eat at local restaurants, Favs include Fat Bob's and Towne. However I'd like to say a kind word for a couple of "chains" Cheeseburger Cheesebuger's local owner only has two shops." Pizzahut may be the ultimate chain, but the waitstaff is local and they need tips too.

Break the Chain?
Not really antichain as I am pro local. And there are so many locally owned and operated restaurants in Buffalo, it's hard not to find something to cure the 'driveway apron ballet: "Where do you want to go? How about....., Nah, I don't want to go there" while the car idles.......... What a great idea to keep going, $20.12 for 2012. Glad it has returned.

Love to support the Locals this week
Just got back from a GREAT deal at Campobellos- 2 dinners, soup or salad, 1 dessert or 1 appetizer or 1/2 carafe of wine for $20.12. We had lasagna and eggplant parm with a side of macaroni, salads and the wine. Both of us loved our dishes and have leftovers for lunch. My absolute fav chain that I can't do without is Chipotle. tpo

Great Food in Buffalo!
So fortunate to enjoy so many great local restaurants in Buffalo . . . I love Lombardo's on Hertel and Sea Bar is always fabulous & Tandoori for great Indian food. Have to admit, when it comes to chains, Bonefish @ Boulevard Mall is consistently good!!!

What a bargain!
Went to Lebro's, thanks to you, Brenda. Had a delicious Italian pasta meal for the bargain price and it included a glass of wine! Thanks for recommending! Love your column.
