Buffalo, NY (WBEN) It's a holiday weekend, but it's no holiday for the State Police and other agencies, who will be patrolling the streets watching out for drunk drivers.
"I'll tell you right now we'll be partnering with at least one municipality in a stationary checkpoint that will occur over the weekend at some point," says Lt. Kevin Barnas. He adds there will be added patrols specifically looking for drunk drivers as well as routine patrols.
Barnas says DWI arrests are up this year. "Last several weeks, we've seen an increase of DWIs in Erie County. Troopers in Erie County are averaging 70 DWI arrests a weekend, up slightly from previous years," notes Barnas.
Barnas says police are not asking you to not drink, just make wise decisions. "Use good judgment. If you're going to engage in consumption of alcoholic beverages, have an alternative way of getting home," advises Barnas.
