Here is his statement:
"Today I am announcing my decision to forego the opportunity to seek re-election to the New York State Assembly and withdraw my candidacy from the race in the new 147th district," stated Smardz.
"By no means is this an easy decision to make. However, circumstances in my personal life require my attention and I feel it would be unfair to the hardworking taxpayers I represent if I was unable to completely commit to this campaign and another term in office at such a critical juncture for our state and our economy," continued Smardz.
"I have always considered it a great honor and privilege to serve the taxpayers of Western New York. However, my family comes first, for without their unyielding support I would not have been able to serve my community in the manner in which I have these past years. I want to thank my supporters for their tireless efforts, my colleagues in state government, and most importantly, the taxpayers and families who entrusted me to represent their interests in the New York State Assembly. It is an experience I will always hold dear," concluded Smardz.
