The board is considering three finalists -- Amber Dixon, the current interim superintendent of the Buffalo School District; Dr. Edward Newsome, assistant superintendent for high schools in the Baltimore County (Md.) public schools; and Dr. Pamela Brown, senior research and planning associate for the Center for Educational Leadership and Technology and Marlborough, Mass.
The process involves the contract negotiation, which will include performance goals, says Lou Petrucci, president of the Buffalo School Board. He says the board is considering the input of all community stakeholders when determining those performance goals.
"You put them into the evaluation method as a way to make sure that whomever the new superintendent is takes them seriously and is accountable for them," Petrucci says.
Rosalyn Taylor, the district's vice president of executive affairs, says each candidate discussed some of the current best practices in schools during their interviews. She those practices included "how to deal with overage students, and alternative high school programs ... so they all brought some interesting, innovative ideas."
Two of the three finalists have educations that produced Ph.Ds, but both Petrucci and Taylor say that's not a requirement to hold the superintendent's position.
Petrucci says the Board is pleased with the three finalists, and despite suggestions to do so, says the board won't conduct a new search for candidates. He notes the district has invested a lot of time and money into this search.
