Forest Lawn to host flag-retirement ceremony

Buffalo (AP/WBEN) -- Forest Lawn Cemetery will host a flag retirement ceremony in advance of Flag Day.

The event continues from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. near the gravesite of one of the former schoolteachers credited with starting the observance.

Members of the public are encouraged to bring tattered or faded flags to the cemetery, where Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, along with Buffalo firefighters, will burn the flags. The ashes will be interred at Forest Lawn.

Former Buffalo teacher Sara Hinson held one of the first Flag Day ceremonies in 1891 -- to teach students respect for the flag. Then, in 1949, President Truman designated each June 14 as National Flag Day.
