Dog Found in Hot Pickup Truck

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) On this first day of summer, the thermometer is on the rise, and so is the need to remind pet owners about the dangers of leaving pets in a hot car. The latest example came Wednesday morning.

The SPCA Serving Erie County says a representative of Lake Effect Diner noticed an Australian Shepherd inside the cab of a pickup truck around 8am. "One of our officers arrived at the scene just before 9am, and took two temperature readings. The first was 91 degrees, the second was 102," says SPCA spokesperson Gina Browning.

The officer was able to remove the dog from the car and rush it back to the SPCA's infirmary at the Tonawanda shelter for evaluation and treatment for heatstroke.

The dog, named "Loki," is now resting comfortably at the SPCA.

Browning says the SPCA is looking to determine the owner of the dog, and if indeed the dog was in the truck all night.

She says this is a reminder to not keep pets in vehicles during hot weather, even for a short period of time.
