Hochul, Collins Discuss Health Care Ruling

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) It didn't take long after the Supreme Court ruled on the individual mandate and other parts of the health care reform law for the two candidates in the 27th District Congressional race to speak out.

"It's now been properly identified as the Obamacare tax increase," says Chris Collins. "Quite frankly, we can't afford it. I'm going to work to repeal it. It's a tax increase on Americans, on job creators. and being so will hurt the economy in jobs."

Collins says the hardest fight to repeal will be in the Senate. "The difficulty will be in the Senate, where to get a lot done it takes 60 votes. I don't think either party will get 60 votes," predicts Collins, who believes Mitt Romney will defeat President Obama and the House will remain under Republican control.

Incumbent Congresswoman Kathy Hochul was not in office at the time of the initial vote. She says she's not entirely satisfied with the law, but "this is what the Supreme Court says. It's the law, and I think we need to move forward, fix what's wrong, but don't throw out the parts people support."

Hochul says there's a need to find middle ground and get things right this time around. There are parts she's not thrilled about either. "I think the independent payment board would be a group of individuals who may in a position to make decisions that will not be acceptable to seniors," notes Hochul, who also plans on voting to repeal the CLASS Act, which would help disabled seniors, only to learn it would be too expensive.
