Buffalo, NY (WBEN Hours after Buffalo Police D District officers were issued new water rescue devices, one was used to pull a man out of the water.
"With the growing excitement and enthusiasm of our waterfront, we wanted to be able to make a water rescue quickly if necessary," says Mayor Byron Brown. He says these devices were deployed hours before a water rescue at Broderick Park.
"It is a floatation device and line that goes up to 100 feet, and there is a life preserver each officer wears in the event they get pulled in during the rescue," adds Brown. He says the officer tosses out the device to the person, who puts it around himself. Then the officer pulls the victim to shore.
Brown says all officers will soon receive such devices.
