Rain Yes, But WNY and Much of US Still in Drought

(WBEN)  If you don't like the heat, relief is on the way, but your brownish lawn is likely to stay that way for a while.

Forecasters say the hot spell should break tomorrow night, but there is very little significant rain expected in the next few days and certainly not enough to change the region's moderate drought conditions.

 "In this part of the country once you get into a drought its pretty hard to break out of it until the fall," says meterologist John Hitchcock at the National Weather Service's Buffalo forecast office.

 "There had been a few spots that picked up some pretty heavy rain (this weekend) but for the majority of the area it's still pretty dry," Hitchcock says.

Since Jan. 1, the United States has set more than 40,000 hot temperature records, and last week the USDA and NOAA's Drought Monitor on Thursday said parts of five Western New York counties are now suffering moderate drought conditions.

They include all of Niagara County, most of Erie County, and the western portions of Orleans, Genesee, and Wyoming counties.

AccuWeather calls for a high Monday of 82 degrees, with humidity levels and weak winds that will make ti feel far warmer.  Tuesday will be the last hot day though. A cold front will come in tuesday night and then for the rest of the week we'll be right near average with highs in the upper 70s to the 80s for the rest of the week.
