Contract awarded for 600 block of Main Street

Buffalo (WBEN) -- The effort to re-open the lower end of Main Street in Buffalo to two-way vehicular traffic moves into a new phase this fall.

Mayor Byron Brown on Monday announced the city has awarded a $6.27 million contract to Mark Cerrone, Inc. to handle the work in the 600 block of Main St., the stretch between Tupper and Chippewa Streets in the Theatre District.

The total cost of that phase is about 8-million. Construction is set to begin in September and wrap up in about a year.

Brown says the work in the 600 block will represent "the first block where the rail is elevated, where cars will actually share the road with the rail [the Light Rail Rapid Transit (LRRT)]."

Brown says the work will include the installation of bike lanes, 45 parking spaces, 49 street trees, 22 planters, and five loading zones.

The work in the 600 block will extend what's already been completed on the 700 block of Main St. and serve as a prelude for the following phase of the "Cars Sharing Main Street" project, the prominent stretch between Chippewa and Huron Streets.  The eventual work on the 500 block could cost as much as $20 million. Brown also noted that in 2011, his administration sought and won a $15 million federal grant, which, combined with the $10 already secured from the state, will fund the redevelopment.

The city of Buffalo has provided the following link showing an animated simulation of what the project will look like.
