Niagara County SPCA investigates animal hoarding

Somerset (WBEN) -- The Niagara County SPCA investigators are looking at a case of animal hoarding.

The agency says it appears to be a case of a cat rescue "that went terribly wrong" at 8681 Lake Rd. in the Somerset / Barker area.
Investigators found between 50 and 100 cats living at this address in a dilapidated home, says Officer Aaron Kandefer of the Niagara County SPCA .

Kandefer says the structure isn't sound and not safe for anything to be living in.

"The house is absolutely deplorable. You just have animal waste that's up to three feet high in certain rooms. There's not a clean space to walk without stepping animal waste," Kandefer says.

He described the home's interior as "collapsing in on itself" and conditions include 2-3 feet of cat feces piled up in the corners of some of the rooms.

He says most of the cats suffer from upper respiratory symptoms and flea anemia. Kandefer estimates the caretakers are likely there about once every 2 weeks or so.

Investigators are removing some of the animals and taking them back to the Niagara County SPCA for medical evaluation. Other cats at the home are feral, so traps will be set in order to catch them.
