Matt Anderson has only played volleyball since high school, playing for West Seneca West and Eden Volleyball Club before moving to Penn State and an international career.
Matt's mother, Nancy, says she's excited to see her son go for the gold. "I'm all set, I leave on Tuesday, my suitcase is packed, I can't wait," Nancy Anderson tells WBEN. She adds she has a good feeling about Team USA. "I think they're going to do fine."
"He was a sophomore when he started on the team, and a friend asked him to join Eden Volleyball Club, and since then we've been traveling the world to watch him play," with stops in Russia and South Korea. She says the entire family is athletic.
" They came from good genes, but he had to do all the work and he's done all the hard work," notes Nancy.
One person who won't be there is Matt's father, Michael, who passed away in 2010. "He'll be watching from above," says Nancy.
Nancy says she'll watch the first two games at home, then travel on Tuesday to watch the US play Brazil, and perhaps the medal round.
