Police said the officer was pursuing a man Tuesday afternoon and they both went over a wall, plunging near or to the bottom of Niagara Gorge, about 1.2 miles north of the falls.
Canadian TV reports rescue crews used a hard-framed basket attached to a fire truck boom to reach the victims.
Police say the injured Niagara Regional Police officer was pulled 100 feet (30 meters) out of the gorge, and airlifted to a hospital in Hamilton with a broken leg.
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says firefighters later recovered the body of the man being chased who died of injuries from the fall.
