Blackout Opponents Now Call for Sunset of Rules

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) A group fighting for changes in the NFL's blackout policy now believes it's time the policy be eliminated. The Sports Fans Coalition is calling for the FCC to sunset the blackout rule in two years.

"When (the NFL) relaxed their own blackout rules, we said why should the government be involved in this at all," ponders Brian Frederick of the Sports Fans Coalition. "Now, we're suggesting a two year sunset on the NFL blackout rule. After two years, if the league or any other interested party has not presented a case to the FCC, the rule would expire."

Frederick contends the blackout rule doesn't help the NFL. "As economists have shown, blackouts have done nothing to drive up ticket sales or boost revenue," claims Frederick. He doesn't believe the league has proven its case to this point.

The NFL recently relaxed its policy to allow teams to lift the blackout for games when 85 percent of tickets are sold.
