Million dollar streetscape project for Lovejoy District

Buffalo (WBEN) -- The city of Buffalo has announced plans for a $1.3 million streetscape project for the Lovejoy and Kaisertown neighborhoods.

Mayor Byron Brown and Common Council President Richard Fontana on Tuesday announced the project would target the Lovejoy and Kaisertown neighborhoods.  It will include improvements to East Lovejoy and Clinton Streets, as well as East Delavan Avenue.

Officials made the announcement outside Houghton Academy at 1725 Clinton St.

The project, scheduled to begin in the Spring 2013, will include replacement of street lighting with LED lighting that the city says is better for energy savings.  The plans also call for reconstruction of curbs and sidewalks, drainage system work, and new handicap accessible walkways.

An attractive streetscape helps to make a community look more stable and more attractive, says Mayor Brown.

"We hope that through this streetscape project, we will improve the quality of life in a neighborhood where the quality of life is already very positive and very strong," he says.

Brown also hopes the eventual work will attract new businesses and residents to that part of the city.

Similar streetscape projects are also planned for the Fillmore Avenue and Elmwood Avenue areas.
