Buffalo (WBEN) -- It's time to move on.
That's what Joel Daniels, the lead attorney for Dr. James Corasanti, told reporters on Thursday following his client's sentencing in Erie County Court.
"It's time to heal, and it's time to move on, and that means the community, the media, and hopefully the Rice family as well," Daniels said, adding that he no plans to appeal.
The Rice family is also involved in a civil case against Dr. Corasanti, who was sentenced to up to a year in the Erie County jail following his conviction on a misdemeanor DWI charge following the accident that killed Alexandria "Alix" Rice on July 8, 2011.
Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita said he was only a little surprised that Daniels declined to his right appeal during Thursday's court session.
"First of all, they're the one who asked for the lesser included offense [misdemeanor DWI] that he got convicted on, so that's the first thing you start with," Sedita said.
Plus, Sedita figures that Corasanti will just serve his time and will likely look to move away from the community when his jail term is completed.
As she deals with the loss of her daughter, Tammy Schueler, says she's working with a group to build a skatepark to honor Alix's name and so she "can be remembered properly."
"That's my project. That is what I am working on. That is what I, as Alix's mother, vow to make sure will happen," Schueler told reporters in a brief session following the sentencing.
