Unemployment for the Western New York region increased in July to 9%, up from 8.1% in June. The state Labor Department notes it's the highest July unemployment percentage since 1990.
Better news comes from north of the border. Statistics Canada reports there were 1.9 million overnight trips to the U.S. in June, the highest number since 1972. Canadian travelers were lured here by higher duty-free exemptions for shoppers.
