Arbitrator Rules Against Buffalo Schools in Teacher Transfer

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) An arbitrator has ruled the Buffalo Public Schools violated the collective bargaining agreement with the Buffalo Teachers Federation by attempting to transfer 50 percent of teachers at three underperforming schools.

"We told the district it was a violation, not only that, it was academically ridiculous," says BTF President Phil Rumore. Rumore says the teachers received satisfactory ratings.

He says there could have been other options, including an educational partnership organization option. "The screening committee for School 33 recommended that, and the teachers approved that, but the school board went against those wishes," notes Rumore.

Rumore says the teachers affected were at Schools 33, 37, and 59.

Buffalo Public Schools issued this statement:

The District is in receipt of the arbitration decision regarding the turnaround plans for three district schools - #33, #37, and #59. We are in consultation with SED officials regarding the next steps for these schools and anticipate being able to provide direction to the principals by the beginning of next week.
