A forensics lab has used DNA to confirm the identity of a female torso found Aug. 29 in the Niagara River as Loretto Jo Gates.

Remains identified as missing Niagara Falls woman



Niagara Falls (WBEN) -- Erie County Central Police Services Forensic Laboratory has confirmed through DNA testing, the female torso that was recovered in the Niagara River on August 29 has been forensically identified as Loretta Jo Gates.
The 30-year-old Niagara Falls, New York resident last been seen on the evening of August 25 in the area of Main Street and Niagara Avenue in the city of Niagara Falls, New York.  Police say Gates was subsequently reported missing by her family to the Niagara Falls Police on September 4. 

The investigation into Gates' death -- which has been classified as a homicide -- is being jointly handled by Niagara Falls Police and New York State Police.

The Niagara Regional Police and Niagara County District Attorney’s Office are also assisting in this investigation.
