Damage reported following storms

Buffalo (WBEN) -- A line of strong thunderstorms rumbled across Western New York this morning -- leaving behind downed trees, power lines, and some damaged buildings.

The first wave of storm moved across the region early this morning, and a second band of severe storms impact the region during the mid-morning hours. Several thunderstorm warnings were posted for heavy rain, lighting, and strong winds.

The winds and rain damaged some buildings on Connecticut Street -- near 145th street, including Buffalo italian sausage maker Mineo & Sapio.

The National Weather Service during the noon hour canceled the thunderstorm watch that had been posted for Allegany, Cattaraugus, Genesee, Orleans, and Wyoming counties until the middle part of the afternoon.

As for power outages -- crews from National Grid and NYSEG were working on Saturday afternoon to restore power to those affected. 

Western New York wasn't the only area of the state impacted by storm activity.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado struck a beachfront neighborhood in New York City.

Videos taken by bystanders show the funnel cloud hurling sand and debris in the air as it moves through the Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens on Saturday.

A Fire Department spokesman says there were power lines down and possibly other damage.

The general manager of the Breezy Point Surf Club tells The Associated Press the storm ripped up cabanas and even picked up industrial-sized metal trash bins.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for Queens and Brooklyn as the storm moved through the city. It expired at 11:30 a.m.
