Herrscher moves on from gas station

Amherst (WBEN) -- An Amherst convenience store remains in operation, but its long-time owner has moved on from the business.

Kathy Herrscher owned the Sunoco station at Maple Rd. and Sweet Home Rd. for nearly 20 years. She left the business back in January.

"We had to do it because ... actually because we had a problem with one of the tanks on the ground, and because the gas margins were so low, we weren't making enough money to actually take care of the problem," Herrscher says.

Herrscher says it became a challenge to serve as an independent service-station operator, but it was also quite difficult to walk away.  It was a family business, she says, with easy access to part-time help.

"Especially there being close to the college [University at Buffalo's north campus]; we had a lot of college students working for us," she says, adding that some students would spend their entire four-year college careers working at the store.

Herrscher says she's grateful to the store's patrons over the years. She plans to begin a new gas company moving into the area, she says.

The Sunoco store now continues operations under new ownership.
