Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The Western New York theater season gets underway tonight with Curtain Up! 2012. 16 theaters will launch their season with shows, followed by a downtown street party.
"When all the theaters let out at 10pm, the Theater District is the place to be," says this year's chairman David Bondrow. "We're gonna have salsa dancing, LeeRon Zydeco, jugglers, and pyrotechnic performers." There will also be an indoor party at Shea's, complete with a swing dancing contest.
Bondrow says the annual event is the way the theater community thanks its loyal audience. "If you add up all the different theaters and productions, it's well over 150 productions. A lot to see, a lot of stories to be told, It will be a tremendous season," says Bondrow.
He adds theater bring a tremendous boost to the economy, not only with restaurants and hotels, but lumber for the sets and fabric for the costumes also help with the economic impact.
Shows begin at 8 tonight.
