Erie County Comptroller to audit ECWA

Buffalo (WBEN) -- The Erie County Comptroller's office says it's beginning an audit of the Erie County Water Authority.

The challenger for that office thinks it should've happened long before this.

Erie County Comptroller David Shenk says the audit covers the period between the start of 2011 and the end of this past August.

Part of the audit is meant to review hiring and purchasing practices, Shenk says.  The authority has come under scrutiny following two patronage hires -- including the brother of County Executive Mark Poloncarz.

On Sunday, the Republican challenger of the County Comptroller's office held a news conference to say this audit is long overdue.

"It's too little too late. It should've been done months ago. Had it been done before, the friends and family plan would not be back in county government," says Stefan Mychajliw, the GOP candidate seeking the Comptroller's office.

Shenk -- who took office earlier this year --- says it does take time to prepare for an audit.

His office says it's the first audit of the Erie County Water Authority since 2000.
