Library Leaders Send Poloncarz Postcards to Restore Funding
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) More than 5,000 postcards were delivered to Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz Tuesday calling for funding to be restored to the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System.
"We've asked the county to give us $3.6 million in addition to the funds we've already received, and this is all about a restoration package," says Director Mary Jean Jakubowski. "It's turn the message and flip the switch for libraries."
Jakubowski says the library has lost a number of services and hours in recent years. "We're holding Mr. Poloncarz to his promise he will support library funding," she says.
Jakubowski says libraries are countercyclical economically, and when times are tough, more library services are demanded. "People borrowed over 8.1 million items from us, and there 42 million computer hours logged in our library in 2011," notes Jakubowski.
The postcards were signed by library users, and Jakubowski says more postcards will be coming Poloncarz's way.
