Sun Sets on Chippewa Comingling

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The six month period allowing bar owners on Chippewa to allow those younger than 21 to enter the establishments after 10pm on Thursday nights expired Tuesday, and with no action during Tuesday's Common Council meeting, the sun has set on the law.

"That has sunset, and the mayor made it very plain if it did come back to him he would veto it," says Councilmember Darius Pridgen. He adds there wasn't much call from bar owners or citizens to keep the rule in place. That means there is no more comingling after 10pm at any of the bars any night of the week.

When it comes to keeping those under 21 off the streets of Chippewa, Pridgen says that's not the point. "This is the United States of America. People should be able to walk any street if they're walking peacefully," explains Pridgen. "I've never been an advocate of blocking off any parts of any streets and only allowing certain people to walk down streets. I just want an orderly and ruly downtown and protect our citizens young and old."

Pridgen says whether it was a success depends on who you ask. "There have still been fights downtown, and there have still been accidents on Thursday nights," says Pridgen. "At the end of the day, I think we tried it, and we were true to our word to examine it.'
