Police: Drunk Man Steals Deputy's Patrol Car

PERRY, N.Y (AP) - Authorities say a 22-year-old western New York man has been charged with drunken driving after he hopped into a sheriff's vehicle and drove off while deputy was talking with other officers.

The Wyoming County Sheriff's Office tells local media that a deputy got out of the vehicle around 2:30 a.m. at a gas station in the village of Perry to speak with local officers when Jordan Herthum of Churchville jumped into the cruiser and sped off.

Police were able to track the vehicle through its on-board GPS system, and officers stopped Herthum a short time later.

Authorities say his blood-alcohol was .20 percent, more than twice the legal limit for driving while intoxicated. Herthum was charged with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation, grand larceny and criminal mischief.

He's being held in the county jail on $20,000 bail.
