NY Providers Received Tainted Steroid

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Federal health authorities have released the names of three New York health care providers that received shipments of a steroid suspected of causing a meningitis outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control says they're among facilities in 23 states that received the steroid from the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts.

It says the New York shipments went to Dr. Sunil Butani in Mineola, Obosa Medical Services in Mount Vernon and Rochester Brain and Spine in Rochester. The state health department declined Thursday to identify the sites but said all the suspect batches had been pulled from use. The steroid was used in injections for back pain.

The outbreak of fungal meningitis has killed five people. The CDC says there've been 47 cases in seven states as of Friday.
