LE ROY (WBEN) - Le Roy Police have charged an East Aurora man with a felony count of criminal weapon possession after finding a homemade grenade in his car.
Police have charged Paul Kaiser, 26, of 12335 Bullis Rd., whose also facing several traffic violations.
Le Roy Police say an officer stopped the car for speeding at around 6:45 a.m. and smelled marijuana inside the car.
"A further search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a homemade explosive device very similar to a live grenade," says Detective John Condidorio, adding that Kaiser is also facing a charge unlawful possession of marijuana.
A state police bomb technician determined the grenade was explosive.
The discovery prompted the evacuation of about eight homes for about two hours Monday, says Condidorio.
Due to the public safety concern, a subsequent search warrant was executed by the Erie County Sheriff’s Department at the suspect's Bullis Road residence in East Aurora to determine if any further explosives were possessed at that location.
