Man Gets 25 Years-to-Life for Fatal Shooting

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A New York man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for mistakenly shooting and killing an 82-year-old man who was fixing his granddaughter's bicycle.

Bangaly Chelley (bang-GAH'-lee CHELL'-lee) did not speak during Tuesday's sentencing in state Supreme Court in Buffalo, where he was convicted of second-degree murder last month.

Authorities say the 30-year-old was targeting someone who'd fought him a day earlier when he fired three shots from a handgun on a Buffalo street in May 2011. Instead, he hit Ansumane (ahn-soo-MAHN'-nee) Kanneh (KAHN'-neh) above his left eye.

Kanneh had moved his family to western New York from Liberia in 2004 to escape that country's violent civil war.

Chelley's attorney says he maintains his innocence. Chelley has a history of arrests for drugs, guns and assault.
