EPA: Contractors Have More Than Half Cleared in Attica
Attica, NY (WBEN) The EPA says the contractor it's overseeing has removed about 55 percent of the waste that's on fire in Attica. When the project will be completed and the problem of odors at Hillcrest is still not known.
"We're continuing to mist the pile," says the EPA's Mike Basile. "The temperature is getting warmer as we get closer to the center of the pile, and unfortunately there is still an odor. But there is no health concern because monitoring shows nothing is leaving the site."
As for the odor itself, "With the change in climatic and wind conditions, the odor is still prevalent, some days worse than others,' explains Basile. But he says once the pile is extinguished the odor will be gone too.
"It's taking a little longer than we expected, so we can't tell you what the estimated end date is," notes Basile.
