Spyro Gyra Comes Home to Celebrate Tralf's 30th in Theater District

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) In the fall of 1982, the Tralf moved down Main Street to be closer to downtown Buffalo, in the city's Theater District. Tonight, the band that took the stage that first night headlines tonight's concert.

"Mostly it was just an honor to open it because the old Tralf meant so much to us," says Jay Beckenstein of Spyro Gyra. "It was one of two clubs the band really frequented and developed our sound. One was the Tralf, the other was a place called Jack Daniel's."

Beckenstein says he was impressed with the Buffalo scene in the late 70s and early 80s. "All sorts of stuff was changing, Chippewa was changing," recalls Beckenstein, and credits two people for helping build that sound. "The Lawson Brothers were the heart of the Tralf. They created an environment that was so great for musicians. My band spent so much time, and it was an environment that we could grow in and be comfortable in and feel surrounded by friends. We were born there."

Beckenstein says the Tralf is the group's original home, but Buffalo is hardly far from his mind or his heart. "We go all over the world and everywhere we find Buffalonians, especially warm places. No matter where they live, they consider themselves from Buffalo. I grew up in Brooklyn, but I definitely have a piece of my heart in Buffalo," notes Beckenstein.

Beckenstein calls performing tonight a treat. "Not only are we inviting a bunch of people from Buffalo who were part of it at the time, but people around the country. Dave Samuels, our mallet player, is coming up from Connecticut. Jeremy Wall, our original keyboardist, is going to show up,' says Beckenstein.

Doors open at 7. The show starts at 8.

Poll
How do you feel about allowing school districts a second vote on their budget plan?
As long as it's a different plan it's ok.
I'm ok with a 2nd vote for the same or a different plan.
  One vote and done!
