Father's Statements to be Part of Murder Trial

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A New York father's statements to police can be used by prosecutors trying him on charges of fatally beating his 10-year-old stepson with a rolling pin.

Lawyers are expected to deliver opening statements in Ali-Mohamed Mohamud's second-degree murder trial on Monday.

The jury was seated Friday, a day after state Supreme Court Justice Christopher Burns refused to suppress what Mohamud told police after his stepson's body was found in the family's Buffalo home.

Nine jurors were seated Thursday.

Defense attorney Kevin Spitler asked prospective jurors if they had the courage to render an unpopular not-guilty verdict in the emotional case.

Prosecutors say young Abdifatah Mohamud was struck about 70 times.
