Cheektowaga, NY (WBEN) New York State Police are investigating an accident that tied up traffic for much of the day Sunday on the I-90.
Eastbound traffic was diverted at exit 53 for approximately 2 hours. The right 2 lanes remained closed for a number of hours to remove the tractor trailer from the underpass.
The accident occurred on the Eastbound portion of the interstate near the I-190 interchange. Authorities say that a tractor-trailer driven by 39-year-old, Umaru Gabon of Los Angeles, CA hit a guardrail and concrete barrier before coming to rest under the exit 53 overpass.
The truck caught fire and numerous rescue units were called to the scene, closing the thruway for hours. The driver and a passenger were treated at ECMC for minor injuries and authorities say the cause was driver error.
