(WBEN) The highest paid teachers in Erie County -- and some of the highest in all of upstate New York-- are in Sweet Home, according to the latest survey and analysis from Business First, the weekly business newspaper.
In a ranking of the Top 100 districts in upstate New York based on median teacher pay, Sweet Home tops all others in Erie County, and is the fourth best paying district in the entire survey.
Williamsville and Lackawanna are not ranked as highly statewide, but place in second and third respectively in Erie County. Orchard Park and Kenmore-Tonawanda round out the Erie County Top 5.
The survey looked at New York State Education Dept. data on upstate school districts, with student populations over 260, and ranked them based on teacher pay levels at five different levels.
Remsen, a small rural district in Oneida County had the state's highest teacher pay, according to the survey, with an median of $89,516, . No other district in the survey had a median salary over $76,000 in the survey.
The complete survey results will be released online Friday to coincide with the paper's weekly publication date, and are previewed in the announcement below, Verbatim from Business First.
Salaries for teachers are generally higher in Remsen than in any other school district in Upstate New York.
That's according to Business First's annual ratings of teacher pay, which are based on an analysis of salary levels at five selected points in teachers' careers.
Remsen, a small district in Oneida County, pays its teachers a median salary of $89,516, according to New York State Education Department data for 2011, the latest year for which official figures are available. No other district has a median above $76,000.
Rounding out the top five for teacher pay are Albany, Greenville, Sweet Home and South Colonie.
Business First, a Buffalo business publication, today released its teacher pay rankings for 430 school districts in 48 Upstate New York counties. (The study was limited to districts with enrollments of more than 260 students.)
Complete details will be printed in Business First's 2012-2013 Guide to Upstate School Districts, a 482-page electronic publication that will be available on Friday.
Business First analyzed pay levels at the fifth, 25th, 50th, 75th and 95th percentiles in each district. (If a district didn't provide the State Education Department with 2011 salary data, the figures from its most recently reported year have been substituted.)
Percentiles indicate the ranking of a given salary on a district's payroll.
A salary at the 25th percentile, for example, is larger than 25 percent of all teachers' salaries within that district.
