Cuomo Says Long Island Hit Hardest By Sandy Power Outages



NEW YORK (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says 90 percent of Long Island utility customers are without electricity after Sandy ravaged the New York City metropolitan area.

He also says hundreds of lives were saved by New York City police, state police, National Guard soldiers and other first responders.

Cuomo says the rebuilding process must include far greater protections against what he said has become more common extreme weather.

He says no weather pattern can shock him now.

He says Wall Street may open Wednesday, along with John F. Kennedy International Airport. LaGuardia Airport will remain closed because of extensive damage.

Buses will resume a limited Sunday schedule at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Cuomo was speaking with President Barack Obama Tuesday morning about emergency funding and other help with recovery work.
