NWS: wind damage had biggest impact in WNY

Buffalo (WBEN) -- The National Weather Service says the storm's wind speed in this area wasn't as strong as first thought, but still caused some damage.

The wind-damage reports are the seen as the biggest impact from Sandy in Western New York, says forecaster Kirk Appfel.

"The majority of those appeared to be in Southern Tier locations. Those areas were hardest hit in Western New York, but there was some damage in the Buffalo metro area as well," Appfel says.

He says the wind gusts came in about 5-10 miles-an-hour less than what were forecast as the peak winds from the storm. And Appfel calls that significant.

"Because it probably saved us quite a bit in damage, although we certainly did have some," he says.

Appfel says the region can expect rain showers for the remainder of the week.
