Both candidates talked to wBEN about those ads in separate campaign appearances Thursday in Niagara County.
Some of the negative ads come from the SuperPACs, says Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul, who spoke at the Town of Lewiston Senior Center.
Hochul says the ads are the result of the U.S. Supreme Court allowing Super PACs to have unlimited support from unnamed donors, she doesn't think it's proper.
"You look at that shadowy ad ... the Halloween one ... I've heard so many people are just fed up with that, particularly seniors. They say why is it even on television...it should be outlawed. I agree with them," Hochul says.
Hochul says the ads that come from her campaign include a message from Hochul indicating her approval of a given advertisement.
Later in the day, before speaking at the Crestwood Senior Center in Wheatfield, Republican challenger Chris Collins says some of Hochul's ads have gone from distorting the truth to downright lies... and he explains.
"And that's an important distinction to make when she's claiming that I fired 115 people that I never fired -- to impune my business credentials ... she's crossed the line," Collins says.
Collins notes one SuperPAC ad against Hochul attacks her voting record, which Collins says, she can't defend.
