Slaughter Wins Re-Election in House Test

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter of New York has won her bid for a 14th term in the House of Representatives.

The Democrat defeated Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks on Tuesday in the newly redrawn 25th Congressional District, which encompasses much of Monroe County.

The western New York race between two well-known women was closely watched. For Slaughter, redistricting meant two-thirds of her district was new, while Brooks was known districtwide after holding county office. Voter enrollment favored Slaughter by nearly 40,000.

Slaughter is known in the House as a champion for women's rights, co-writing the Violence Against Women Act and co-chairing the Pro-Choice Caucus.

At 83, her re-election bid wasn't all smooth sailing. She was temporarily sidelined after breaking her leg while crossing a Manhattan street in April.
