Chaut. Co. Sheriff Warns of Scam Alert

Mayville, NY (WBEN/AP) Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace is warning people not to fall for a scam that begins with a help wanted ad in the newspaper.

People responding to the ad for a personal assistant think they're being hired to run errands and do banking and shopping for the employer.

Gerace says they're sent a package from the supposed employer containing U.S. postal money orders for an amount more what they're told they'll be paid. Victims are told to deposit the money orders and send the balance via Western Union to a specified address.

Gerace says the money orders are counterfeit and that the money the victim then wires to the scam artist is untraceable.

He said the scam was recently reported to his office.
