"We were putting this memorial up that my son and nephew had built and put together for us," says Charles Elberson, the father of Jocelyn Elberson.
The family gathered late Tuesday afternoon with prayers, tears, and hugs.
Elberson says it's meant to memorialize Jocelyn -- and remind drivers that people lost their lives in that location. Sheila Pelton, 81, of East Amherst also died in the crash.
Her daughter-in-law, Lisa Pelton, praised her mother-in-law during a phone to WBEN's Tom Bauerle on Tuesday.
Elberson also shared a story about his young grandson, earlier in the day, typing some numbers and letters into a draft text message on his wife's cell phone. The combination, including a series of 7s (a sign of an angel), has the family believing Jocelyn was trying to communicate through the young child.
"It's like her trying to tell us hi, I'm an angel, I'm not sick, "Joce" okay," Elberson says noting the numbers included some 4s (which include the letters "h" and "i" on a telephone key pad).
The cross, which includes a small placard bearing the message "In Loving Memory of Jocelyn Elberson," is just off the bike path along Tonawanda Creek Road, where the motorcycle accident happened.
Amherst police have charged David Smith, 53, of Niagara Falls with DWI and criminally negligent homicide in the Sunday afternoon accident.
