Police Chief Andrew Benz says David Gerken, Jr., 26, of Palmyra in Wayne County was found dead in the creek behind the stadium. Benz then referenced the initial report from the Erie County Medical Examiner's office.
"At this time, the preliminary results are that it was an accidential drowning," Benz said in addressing reporters outside the police station.
Hypothermia may have also played role, with no sign of any trauma or foul play involved, he added.
"At this point, it appears to be a tragic accident," Benz said.
He also said it's their understanding that Gerken was ejected from Thursday night's game, but they don't know if alcohol was a contributing factor in his death.
Gerken's brother had made arrangements to meet at Tailgaters, a bar near the stadium, following his ejection on Thursday night, and eventually got concerned when he didn't show up.
