Local pastor spends week with homeless for good cause

Buffalo (WBEN) -- A local pastor is spending this week living among the homeless, and raising awareness for the needy this holiday season.

It's the 14th year that Pastor Eric Johns of the Buffalo Dream Center has dedicated a week to being with the homeless.

"To get out the office ... to change my routine and get out on the streets with the people that we're reaching," Johns says.

Johns says the area's homeless population even looks forward to it.

He started Monday afternoon at a soup kitchen at 200 East Eagle Street.  The Durham Memorial AME Zion Church operates soup kitches.

Rev. Johns says his week with the homeless is part of the effort to raise awareness for the Buffalo Dream Center's Christmas campaign called "Boxes of Love."

"We're going to help 3,000 families this Christmas with food for their families and wrapped Christmas gifts for their kids," he says.

The Buffalo Dream Center hopes to distribute 5,000 wrapped gifts to needy children in Buffalo, Amherst, North Tonawanda, and Niagara Falls.

To make a donation or support the program, call 854-1001.
