"We're looking to deal with environmental issues," says Howard. "We're talking about changing society's norms about drinking and driving and one of those big things is enforcement." Expect patrols and checkpoints throughout the holidays, says Howard. He says this time of year is most dangerous for drunk driving fatalities. "Drunk driving fatalities per day goes up from 35 before Thanksgiving to 50 come New Year's Day nationally," notes Howard.
Howard says teaming up with mental health and drug and alcohol abuse prevention specialists to combat drunk driving helps in the effort to combat DWI. "Instead of doing it by ourselves, the partnerships work well in preventing drunk driving."
He says this year's billboard will show three reindeer. "We're focusing not just on the alcohol, but the drugs. Our message says don't drive if you're tipsy, buzzed, or Blitzen. If you get caught driving while impaired, you'll be caught," warns Howard.
He says billboard from other organizations, like CAID (Crusade Against Impaired Driving) also help raise awareness.
