35-year-old Richard Metcalf was arrested Tuesday on burglary charges in Depew, a village near Buffalo.
Police say Metcalf was acting strange and was taken to the Erie County Medical Center with an elevated heart rate. He was later arraigned and taken to the Erie County Holding Center.
Officials say Metcalf became combative at the holding center and showed signs of mental illness. He was returned to the medical center late Wednesday for an evaluation. Erie County Sheriff officials say he suffered some type of medical emergency while being transported.
Metcalf died late Friday. The sheriff's department is investigating
